I have a picture here of a Mom and Dad and three kids who lived on practically nothing and yet had the time of their lives most of the time. While pouring over old photos of our family recently, I came upon some pretty funny shots and precious memories of our family's growing-up years. Sure, there were the hard spots, troubles, mistakes and burdens and heartaches. But from this old photo, I see a family with joy in their eyes and laughter on their lips. It reminded me of the ... At the End of the Rope
Life is funny. The very moment you think you are at the end of your rope, God steps in and reveals Himself. Why does He wait so long? Like Abraham and Sarah. He could have given them the promised child when they were young. Why did He wait until they were 100 and 90 years old? Why did they have to wait until having a child became a laughing matter? Is anything too hard for the Lord? I was thinking the other day about the times in our lives when we've been at the end of our rope. ... View the Post
Sleeping With A Stranger
Sometimes our best laid plans go strangely and dangerously awry. What should have been an easy four-hour trip from Spokane, WA to Missoula, MT aboard a comfortable Greyhound bus turned into an epic journey full of scary adventures and wild experiences for me. The skies were blue and there was about six inches of new snow on the ground that day, Dec. 7th, 2012, as Dan and I drove to Post Falls, Idaho to attend our annual Christmas luncheon for the pastors and wives in our district. Fear Not!
Fear cuts to the heart of every human soul. Yet fear was the last thing from our minds that bright, sunny day when Dan and I decided to tour the Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs. We had driven to the city for a District Conference with our denomination, and, having arrived early, we drove up to the national park to tour and hike around. As we walked the pathways, standing below the gigantic monolithic red stones that peppered the park, we were in total awe of a God who could create such ... View the Post
Real Power
Crack! Dan and I sat bolt upright in bed. It was 5am several years ago. The lightning strike and thunder clap came simultaneously, shaking the house. Dan turned over to go back to sleep, but I got up. Nothing seemed amiss, so I went back to bed. When he went to go for his morning walk, he told me to come and look in our back yard. What we saw amazed us and was the topic of conversation on the golf course for a long time. A bolt of lightning had struck the tallest pine tree in our yard. In ... View the Post
A Trail Hike We Will Never Forget
Many people are coming home after a journey this time of year. We just returned from Montana where we enjoyed a family reunion at the Sauskojus Resort outside Billings, MT. I remember a journey I took once with Dan. We were between churches and were living with my folks in Plains, Montana. My sister, Wendy, and her husband, John, were trying to sell their house. They had a guiding business and left to go their hunting camp, leaving us with instructions on how to contact them if they got a ... View the Post
