It began over a year ago. But as I think about it, it really began much longer back than that.
I have suffered for years with the same symptoms and have never had any relief from the doctors I saw. I am not blaming them or being derogatory about doctors, hospitals, nurses, the medical profession or medicine. I am merely stating what my experience has been up to this point in my life.
My symptoms, that fluctuated from severe to mild, included fatigue, allergies, chest pain, digestive problems, mild aches and pains, and weight gain. I would go “down” for several days with what seemed like the flu but would never get the flu. Then it would seem like something in my body would “click” and I could get up and go back to my duties.
About a year ago, many of the chronic symptoms worsened.
I had been suspicious for years that I have a thyroid deficiency because of fatigue, and also because it is in the family, but I could never get a blood test that showed a positive thyroid malfunction. For several years, I took a thyroid supplement that helped my thyroid along, but it wore off, and I was starting to have severe fatigue issues. So I went to a doctor and they did the usual blood tests. All of the tests came back in the normal range, so the doctor told me I didn’t have a thyroid problem.
I was also, at this time, gaining weight, and even though I tried to lose, it would not come off.
I noticed that my ankles were swelling and this caused me concern because several medical professional people I saw informally told me this could be a signal of a serious problem.
I had other symptoms, too, which included chest pains, digestive problems, and headaches. I had trouble swallowing, and it felt like the glands in my throat were swollen and sore, so I went to a ENT specialist and was told he didn’t see anything abnormal when he looked with his scope.
In desperation, I started taking a raw thyroid supplement that is similar to the natural thyroid medicine, Amour (which you can’t get without a doctor’s prescription). This seemed to help me for quite a while.
In October of 2014, I suffered back pain and discovered I had a urinary tract and kidney infection.
The doctor I saw at this time noticed something amiss on the EKG he took. So he sent me to a cardiologist. All the doctors I saw from that time on noted my swollen ankles and the fatigue I was suffering with, but they could offer no solution. I went through all the blood tests and heart tests at the cardiologist’s office. I also had tests done for lupus (negative), Lyme’s disease (negative), and diabetes (negative).
I went into the ER quite a few times,
(four, to be exact, in four months!) with various problems, including chest pains (thinking it was a heart attack), headaches (a side effect, maybe, of the medication the doctor was giving me), pain in my leg, and another time, dizziness. The cardiologist did a test to see how much oxygen I was getting in my system at night and discovered I wasn’t getting very much. So he ordered a machine that gave me oxygen at night and a test for sleep apnea. This, too, came back negative. The cardiologist took my blood pressure and it dropped so low when I stood up that he was very concerned and put me on several heart medications.
One time I went to the ER because of a headache, I told them my neck (back of my neck) was hurting, so they did a CAT scan. This showed some “white matter disease” and I went for an MRI on my brain. This, too, came back negative and normal. (I’m told white matter disease is normal when you age.)
Because of sharp pains I was having in my legs and feet, the doctor ordered an EMG test done (for nerves in my legs and feet) to test for neuropathy. This came back negative, as well.
By now, four months into the severe symptoms I’d been suffering from, and having undergone numerous tests, I was feeling very sick.
I was a puzzle and a dilemma to the doctors. They could not name what I had or do anything to solve the root problems. To give them credit, they really cared and were very upset that I was continuing to have increasingly serious problems. The only thing they could do was to give more tests and prescribe more medications to treat the symptoms — none of which helped me diddly-squat.
Dan felt my condition was getting worse by the day, and that it was life threatening.
I was so tired and sick that I could hardly function normally. Remembering those days now, it seems like I was in a fog and was just barely hanging onto life. I would get up in the morning so tired that I wanted to crawl back into bed. By early afternoon, I was finished. Even if I took a nap, I felt no better. Nothing could renew the energy I had lost. I marvel now that I could have continued on and done as much as I did through that awful time.
One day, I reached the bottom.
I’d thought many times about calling my friend, (I’ll call her Linda), for advice, since her mother is a homeopathic doctor and she works closely with her.
That morning in January, I messaged Linda and asked if she could contact me as I was feeling very bad. I didn’t expect her to respond very quickly, but she sent a message to me in about two minutes, and we talked that morning for an hour! From the first that I heard her voice, it was like God wrapped His arms around me, and I knew the answer was the on way! I felt such peace about this that I cannot describe it to you.
I might add that both Dan and I are very conservative and we’ve always been a little skeptical about the “other” kind of medicine, about taking lots of supplements, and doing weird things to be healthy. So it was only as I reached bottom that I was able to call her and receive her help.
The first thing she asked me was, “What are you eating?”
Now, this is a question that NONE of the medical doctors asked me. Funny. You would think that what you eat would be an important part of health.
I told her that I’d been on the Atkins (high protein) diet for many years and that I still ate that way. That for breakfast, I usually had eggs, bacon (or sausage), juice and coffee. The rest of my meals followed suit – high on proteins and low on carbs. I ate very little fruit as fruit contains sugar. I confessed that during Thanksgiving and Christmas I had indulged a great deal and ate a LOT of sugar and white flour. And now that I remember it, after our huge Christmas dinner, I immediately felt very tired and had to go lie down for awhile! But I still didn’t connect the dots.
Linda told me right away that she was taking me off beef entirely. Then she proceeded to put me on what I discovered was a LOW protein diet.
She told me to drink a lot water, but to drink it in small amounts, and to put lemon in it. She told me to eat lots of fresh vegetables and fruits and to stay light on meat, dairy, and coffee. She sent me an article that was written by a Christian scientist about the cells. The cells, the article stated, are the basic engines for life in our bodies and that if the cells aren’t healthy, we won’t be healthy, either. And that what you eat effects the cells drastically, and thus, your health.
The article said that when you don’t eat right, there’s a lot of toxins floating around in your body.
So I started drinking water. I went to the store and bought oodles of fresh vegies and fruits. (In fact, I LOVE the fresh produce aisle of our grocery store now and have discovered the joys of sweet potatoes and squash!) I cut sugar, flour, and anything made with those ingredients entirely out of my diet. I cut out all beef. With the increase of fresh fruit into my diet, I find I don’t crave sugar or chocolate. Even my cravings for coffee have diminished.
What Linda eventually put me on was a ph Balance diet.
I am trying to balance the acids (bad) and alkaline (good) levels in my body. My body was way off balance and had accumulated a lot of toxins. It was this that had caused my ill health.
Linda sent me some supplements that will help my brain function better and will communicate with my system. This disorder in my brain is what caused my thyroid, kidneys, heart, digestive system, and many other organs to fall into disrepair and become threatened and stressed. But instead of treating the symptoms, this cure goes to the root of the problem, the cells.
I bought a book (written by a doctor) on ph balance that has a food chart with the levels of alkaline and acid in them. I study that book and try to eat foods that are high in alkaline and avoid the foods that are high in acid. Eventually, my cells will be able to flush off the gunk that has accumulated in my system all these years and my organs and glands (and brain!) can function normally.
Watch out, world! If I get any “brainier” I might be dangerous!
Since I started on this new diet and way of eating, I have regained my health.
I have more energy, so I am getting more exercise. The swelling in my ankles has gone down remarkably. I no longer have to use the oxygen tank the cardiologist had me on since last November. I am off all the prescription drugs the doctors put me on, which caused me such grief with the side effects.
Surprisingly, it was a change in my diet that has made the great change in my life.
I feel like Linda (through God) has given me my life back. I sleep well. I can work throughout the day without that awful wave of exhaustion sweeping over me. I have laughter, life and hope back. Everyone I know has remarked on how much better I am doing, even those who might be skeptical of such methods. The proof is right in front of their eyes.
This is the slow cure to my health and weight problems, but I can be patient with the process and rest in the goodness of God. I do not know where I am going with this, but I know this one thing – once I was sick, and now I am on the path to health. Praise God!
WHAT ARE YOU EATING?
DID YOU KNOW THAT IT COULD BE EATING YOU?
Go back to the Bible. Daniel, chapter one, describes probably the perfect diet – fresh vegetables and fruits, lots of water, naturally grown produce, and little (or no) meat. There you go. God’s answer to my health problem was right in front of my eyes and I didn’t see it. I am just a beginner in this new way of eating and living and I have much to learn. But I am so thankful God answered my prayer and set my feet on this path.
I’m not saying this is for everyone. It is God’s answer for me and I am content.
